Super Mario Bros. Crossover is a fan-made game that mixes characters from different classic video games into the world of Super Mario Bros.. However, the developers of Super Mario Bros. Crossover no longer support the game, and it has gone offline with the end of Flash. Despite this, you can still play the game by downloading the Flash file and using a standalone Flash Player. This guide will show you how to do that step-by-step.
The beauty of Super Mario Bros. Crossover is that you can play through the original levels of Super Mario Bros., but instead of only controlling Mario, you have the option to play as famous characters from other NES games, such as Mega Man, Link from The Legend of Zelda, Samus from Metroid, Bill Rizer from Contra (my personal favorite), and others.
Each character keeps their special abilities, like Mega Man’s blaster, Samus’s energy weapons, and Bill’s guns from Contra, which makes the gameplay fun and varied. It lets you explore the familiar Mario world in exciting new ways by using these characters’ unique powers.
Step 1: Download the Stand-Alone Flash Player
Since Super Mario Bros. Crossover was built using Flash, and Flash is no longer supported in web browsers, you will need to manually download Flash Player. The specific version you need to download is called Flash Player Projector. It is a stand-alone version of Flash Player, meaning it works independently from your browser and can run Flash files directly.
Instructions:
- Go to this link to download the Flash Player Projector:
Download the Flash Player Projector. - On this page, scroll down until you find the section titled “Flash Player Projector”.
- There will be different versions for Windows, Mac, and Linux. Choose the one that matches your operating system.
- Make sure to download the regular Flash Player Projector and not the “Content Debugger” version.
- Once the file is downloaded, you can run it immediately because it doesn’t need to be installed like other programs. Simply double-click the downloaded file to open it.
Optional:
If you want, you can set up the Flash Player Projector as a permanent application on your computer by moving the file to a specific location:
- On Windows: Move the file to C:\Program Files and create a desktop shortcut for easier access.
- On Mac: Move the file to your Applications folder and make a shortcut in the dock if desired.
Now that you have the Flash Player Projector, you’re ready to move on to the next step, which is downloading the game file.
Step 2: Download the Super Mario Bros. Crossover Flash Game File
Now that you have the Flash Player Projector, the next step is to download the game file itself. The game file is saved in a format called SWF (Shockwave Flash).
Instructions:
- Go to this link to download the game:
Download Super Mario Bros. Crossover. - On the page, scroll down until you see the “Download Options” section.
- Find the file labeled “SHOCKWAVE FLASH” (usually shown as a .swf file).
- Click on this file to download it to your computer.
- Once the file has been downloaded, it will be saved to your computer’s default download location (usually the Downloads folder). You don’t need to install anything, as this file will be opened directly in the Flash Player Projector.
Now that you have the game file, you are ready to open and play it using the Flash Player, which we will cover in the next step.
Step 3: Open the Game
Now that you have both the Flash Player and the game file, you are ready to play Super Mario Bros. Crossover. This step will show you how to open the game file in the Flash Player and start playing.
Instructions:
- First, open the Flash Player app that you downloaded in Step 1.
- If you didn’t set it up as an application, you can find it in the folder where you downloaded it and double-click the file to open the program.
- In the Flash Player window, click on File in the top-left corner, then select Open from the drop-down menu.
- A new window will pop up. Use it to navigate to the location where you saved the game file (the .swf file you downloaded earlier).
- This file is likely in your Downloads folder unless you moved it to another location.
- Once you have found the game file, click on it, then click Open. The game will now load in the Flash Player window.
Now that the game is open and running, the next section will explain the play the game.
Step 4: How to Play Super Mario Bros. Crossover
Now that you have Super Mario Bros. Crossover running, here’s how to play and customize the game by changing settings, selecting a character, adjusting map skins, and learning the controls.
Adjusting Game Settings:
Before starting the game, you can adjust various settings to personalize your experience. These include:
- Map Difficulty: Choose how hard the game should be, with options for more challenging enemies or easier gameplay.
- Game Mode: Select a mode, such as playing with all characters or just one.
- Powerup Mode: Choose between classic and modern powerup mode. The modern mode will offer different effects for power-ups based on the character you choose and the powerups from their original games. I personally prefer the modern powerup mode.
- Full Screen Mode: To switch to fullscreen mode, press Ctrl + F in Windows or Command + F in MacOS. You can also find this option in the settings menu.
These settings give you full control over how the game looks and plays, making it easy to customize the game to your liking.
Choosing Your Character and Changing the Map Skin:
After launching the game, you will arrive at the Character Selection screen. Here, you can choose from a variety of characters, each with their own abilities. Once you’ve selected a character, you’ll begin the game with their unique powers.
Additionally, you can change the look of the game’s levels by selecting a different map skin. This option is available right below the character selection area. When you click Change Map Skin, a new screen will appear with different visual styles inspired by other classic games. Choose the one you like, and the levels will be updated with that design.

These controls can also be customized, which is explained below.
Customizing the Controls:
You can change the default controls to match your personal preference. Here’s how to customize the controls:
