How to Buy the Perfect Computer (By an IT Pro)

With so many options, buying a new computer can feel overwhelming. Instead of simply picking one for you, I want to help you choose the perfect computer for yourself. I’ve created this guide to help you understand what to look for, how to compare options, and where to find the best deals.

Note: I’m not being paid for these recommendations. These are my honest opinions based on 25 years of experience in this industry.

Understand Your Needs

Start by identifying what you need the computer for. Different tasks require different features so it’s important to understand your requirements. Ask yourself these key questions:

  • What will I use the computer for? (e.g., work, gaming, browsing, video editing, etc.)
  • Do I need a laptop or a desktop? Laptops are portable while desktops are generally more powerful and easier to upgrade.
  • What’s my budget? Decide on a price range to narrow down your choices.

Choose Between a Mac and a PC

Once you’ve defined your needs, decide if a Mac or a PC is the right choice for you:

Mac

  • Works well with other Apple devices (e.g., iPhone, iPad).
  • Simple and user-friendly but usually more expensive.
  • Limited options for upgrading or repairing.

PC

  • Offers a wide range of prices and features to fit any budget.
  • Better for gaming and specialized software.
  • Easier to upgrade and repair.

My Recommendation: PCs are typically more affordable and work just as well for most users. If you already use Apple devices, consider a Mac but be prepared for a higher cost.

Match the Right Specs to Your Needs

Here are computer specs I recommend to look for based on the following use cases:

For Standard Use

If you mainly browse the internet, check emails, and create documents:

  • Processor: Intel Core i-series, Intel Core Ultra series, AMD Ryzen-series, or Apple M series (Macs).
  • RAM: At least 8GB.
  • Storage: 256GB SSD or more.
  • Screen Size: 13–14 inches for laptop portability or 15–17 inches for a larger laptop display.
  • Operating System: Windows or macOS

For Gaming, Graphics, or Editing

For more demanding tasks like gaming, video editing, or graphic design:

  • Processor: Intel Core i5/i7/i9, Intel Core Ultra Series, AMD Ryzen 5/7/9, or Apple M Pro series.
  • RAM: Minimum 16GB.
  • Graphics Card (GPU): NVIDIA GeForce RTX series (PCs); integrated GPUs for Macs with M Pro series.
  • Storage: 512GB SSD or larger (1TB is better for large files).
  • Screen Size: 15–17 inches for laptops.
  • Operating System: Windows or macOS

For Business Use

For reliability and longevity:

  • Use the specs above depending on your tasks.
  • Look for a model with at least a 3-year warranty for durability. You may need to purchase the computer directly from the manufacturer for an extended warranty.

Research and Compare Options

Once you know your needs, research and compare your options online:

Amazon’s Best Sellers List

The Amazon Best Sellers list is one of my favorite tools because it gives a quick look at computers that are popular and trusted by other buyers. I like how it combines product details, customer reviews, and pricing all in one place, making it easy to research and compare computers.

Here’s how to use it:

  • Check Specs: Look at the processor, RAM, storage, and Operating System to ensure they meet your needs.
  • Read Reviews: See what other customers say about the performance, durability, and common issues.
  • Find Deals: Use the list to compare prices and spot options that offer great value for your budget.

Slickdeals

Slickdeals is a website that lists great discounts on computers.

  • Browse Deals: Check the computer deals section and filter by brand or price.
  • Compare Prices: Verify if the deal is better than prices on Amazon or other retailers.
  • Check Specs: Ensure the discounted computer meets your requirements.
  • Read User Comments: Other users often provide helpful insights about the product.

AppleInsider for Macs

If you’re buying a Mac, check AppleInsider’s Price Guide.

  • Compare Prices: Find the lowest prices from various retailers.
  • Look for Extras: Some deals include gift cards, accessories, or extended warranties.
  • Verify Specs: Make sure the Mac’s specifications meet your needs.

Visit a Store to Try Out Computers

If you’re not sure about your choice, visit a local electronics store (e.g., Best Buy, Micro Center, Staples, Office Depot, etc.) to try computers in person.

Why Visit a Store?

  • Test Screen Sizes: Try different sizes, such as 13–14 inches for portability or 15–17 inches for more workspace.
  • Check Weight and Build: For laptops, lift them to see if the weight is manageable, especially if you’ll carry it often.
  • Try the Design: Test the keyboard, trackpad, and overall feel to make sure it suits you.

Pro Tip: Ask About Price Matching

Many stores will match online prices from retailers like Amazon. If you find a computer you like in-store but notice a lower price online, ask a salesperson if they’ll match it. This way, you can enjoy the convenience of buying in person while still getting the best deal.

Ask for a Second Opinion

Before finalizing your purchase, share your choices with someone you trust. A tech-savvy friend or family member can confirm whether the specs meet your needs or suggest alternatives.
