It’s great when you need to read a message or take a photo in bright sunlight. But when you’re in a dark bedroom trying to wind down, it can feel as harsh as staring into the sun. And if your spouse is sleeping next to you, the brightness becomes even more of an issue.

While features like Night Shift and adjusting the display brightness can ease eye strain and improve comfort, they often don’t go far enough.

In this article, we’ll explore two ways to dim your screen even further and set them up so you can activate them with a simple triple-click of your iPhone’s Home button.

Two Settings to Dim Your iPhone More Than the “Brightness” Setting

Zoom Filter

The first option to dim your screen is the Zoom Filter, which works alongside the Zoom feature in Accessibility settings. This filter lets you apply various display effects, including the one we’re focusing on: Low Light.

To set up the Low Light Zoom Filter, follow these steps:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Use the Search bar to look for “Zoom” and select the option labeled Accessibility → Zoom.
  3. Scroll down to find Zoom Filter.
  4. Choose Low Light.

Now, when Zoom is enabled, your screen will automatically dim. You can test this by toggling Zoom on and off in the Zoom settings.

If the screen zooms when you enable Zoom, double-tap with three fingers to return to the normal view.

Reduce White Point

The second option to dim your display is Reduce White Point, which lowers the intensity of bright colors. You can adjust it from 25% to 100% based on your preference.

To enable Reduce White Point:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Search for Reduce White Point and select it.
  3. Toggle on Reduce White Point.
  4. Adjust the slider to your desired level. A good starting point is around 60-70%.

Create a Shortcut to Reduce White Point and Zoom by Triple-Clicking the Home Button

Great! Now you know how to dim your iPhone screen, but you probably don’t want to keep your display looking dull all the time. Plus, turning these settings on and off with multiple taps can be a hassle.

Wouldn’t it be great if you could toggle these settings with just a triple-click of your Home button? Good news—you can! (If you read the intro, you might already know this, but if you haven’t, go check it out—it’s a great read!)

Here’s how to set up the triple-click shortcut:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Search for Accessibility Shortcut and select it.
  3. Choose Reduce White Point and Zoom by tapping each one—they should show a checkmark once selected.

That’s it! Now, when you triple-click the Home button, you’ll be able to quickly enable or disable these features.

If you prefer one setting to toggle automatically, go back to Accessibility Shortcut and select just that option. For example, if you only check Reduce White Point, a triple-click will turn it on or off instantly.

Wrapping Up

By using the Zoom Filter or Reduce White Point settings, you can dim your screen beyond what the standard brightness slider allows. And if you layer both settings together, you’ll achieve an even darker display!

The best part? You can use the iPhone’s Accessibility Shortcut to toggle your preferred dimness setting with just a triple-click of the Home button.
